Gibson Dusk Tiger – Robot Guitar

I just discovered that Gibson just released a follow-up to the robot guitar they made, and they even gave it another nasty name. it is called the “Dusk Tiger.” It’s like a pimped out version of the Robot guitar. The MCK or the Master Control Knob has now been upgraded and now features a full – color LED screen, not to mention more functionalities. The design of the guitar looks like a tiger textured Les Paul. It comes with a Gibson Burstbucker 3 pickup and a P-90 h, and an additional piezo pick up that you can blend in with the two pickups using a rotational knob on the three ways pick up switch. You could also choose a tone for your guitar by switching the knob, tones ranging from the classic ’58 Les Paul or the f355 or even a Gibson acoustic Guitar.

It still has all the common robot guitar features, the auto-tuning and he auto-intonation, only faster and simpler to operate. And now, you can save up to 16 user preset tunings, accessible with just a turn and click of the knob. Mind you, the Gibson Dusk Tiger is a limited edition guitar, only 1000 were made, so if you got the funds, go out and grab one of these rocking guitars.

Guitar Amps – How Do They Work?

Guitar amps are one of the most important things in guitar playing. It is considered as a part of the electric guitar since it is the reason why you can hear its sound. Guitar amplifiers have been here even before the time when electric guitars were born. They use to amplify the acoustic –electric guitars back then. Top brands of amplifiers like Fender, Marshall and Mesa Boogie have been striving for quality and had given us the best quality of amplifiers in the whole world. Whatever specific preference that you need in guitar amplifiers, they have it or they will make it for you. We all know how great these things are but ever wonder how do they work?  Here’s a quick info for you:

Guitar amplifiers amplify the sounds from your guitar to drive the loudspeaker. It’s as simple as that. But, to break it down for you, into a more specific explanation, we will discuss it one by one, very quick.

When you strum your electric guitar, the sound waves that it produces are converted in electric signals with the help of guitar pick – ups. They pick up the sound wave and convert it into electric signals and then feed it to the guitar amplifier.  This is done by plugging the cable into the input jack of the guitar amp. After that, the signals are amplified, make it strong enough to power the loudspeakers inside the guitar amp, thus, producing a louder version of the sound from your electric guitar. Simple, isn’t it? Yes. That’s how guitar amplifiers work.

The Stratocaster

Leo Fender and Fender Guitars produced its own solid body electric guitar back in 1951 and as the popular quote goes, “the rest is history.”

The Stratocaster was Fender’s flagship model. It was introduced to the public in 1954 and up until now, it is still one of the most popular electric guitar in the whole damn world. Why is it so popular? Well, the Stratocaster tone and design was flexible enough to be suitable for almost all genres; from classical to jazz, country, punk, metal, rock and roll and blues. Name it and the Strat can play it. Who uses Stratocaster?

Well, one of the Strat users I know, I think you’ve heard of him is Eric Clapton. It was like Eric Clapton was meant for the Strat. His voice and his style in playing the guitar fits the strat perfectly, everything was natural. Another popular guitar player who uses the Stratocaster was the late Jimi Hendrix. His legacy shaped the history of the guitar world and has become the catalyst which gave way to the birth of many other guitar gods like Joe Satriani and john Mayer.

The quality of a Fender Stratocaster has improved over time. There are also cheaper versions as well, for those who can’t afford the expensive American and Mexican standard; they could instead buy the Squier Strat, Squier Affinity series and the cheapest of them all, the Bullet. But don’t get me wrong, eventhough it’s cheap, the Fender quality stays the same

The State of Music Today

Nowadays, especially in America, all you see and hear on the TV and the radio is loads of crap. I couldn’t call that music. I mean, all that crap that teaches our kids to get down and dirty aren’t worthy of being called music, that’s a fact. Music industry is focusing on selling it to teenage girls, and for real musicians, they don’t get good music at all. They have to dig it up just to find some good tunes. Look at Justin Bieber, man! The boy can’t even sing properly and couldn’t write his own songs and he gets total exposure just because he’s marketable and teenage girls would love it. What’s wrong with you guys? There are millions of talented musicians out there, millions of times more talented than Bieber boy (if you can call that talent) who would die for this kind of exposure, but no, they will not get it. Why? Because they aren’t marketable and cute.
There are lots of guitar – driven rock bands out there who doesn’t care about fashion at all; all they care about is the music and its quality. For us musicians, that is a good thing, but for those major industry music marketing blokes, that’s worthless. This definitely proves how corrupt and dirty the industry is. I just hope one day, people would get tired of listening to lady gaga and start listening to John Mayer instead. Look at Splender or Alien Ant Farm. They both got talent, skillful members, especially guitar players, but where are they now? They became victims of Major Label Corruption. But even though they are not in the front rows anymore, you could still hear that people regard their songs as one of the best songs ever. That’s pure talent. Two years from now you won’t hear Bieber Boy’s “one time”. That’s garbage.

Yer Guitar Pedal

A guitar pedal is a necessary accessory for guitar players. You don’t want to play the same old boring clean guitar sound of your guitar, right? A guitar pedal adds variety to the sound your guitar produces. It’s also one way of improving your guitar skills, if you’re looking for something to new to grind with.

A guitar pedal, depending on the type, can create various sounds and effects that add color, loudness and angst to your normal guitar sound. Example of a guitar pedal is the Distortion pedal. It amplifies your guitar sound to overdrive levels, thus, making the sound distorted. You can do a lot of stuff with the distortion pedal. Most rock guitar players can’t live without this effect. You can choose either you wanted a light distorted sound, or a heavy, grinding sound.

Guitar pedals can add other effects to your guitars too. The wah pedal creates a “wah” sound, which can be controlled by foot. The delay effects add delay sounds to the guitar.

Placing all those pedals in your pedal rack would be impossible, with the number of effects pedal available in the market. The solution to this mess is combining a huge variety of customizable effects into one package. This is what we call the multi – effects processor. They are usually digital and cheap compared to the analog ones and you could obviously do more with it. You can make your own effects using all the available effects presets.

Guitar Tuning

Let’s face the facts; you can’t play the guitar unless you know guitar tuning. Okay, so you have a kick-ass guitar that looks expensive but you couldn’t play it yet because it is out of tune. What shall you do when you don’t know how to tune it? This is why guitar tuning is a requirement for guitar players. What if you’re guitar is already tuned? It will still eventually go out of tune. Lots of factors affect the tuning of the guitar. The stings go out of tune when you, 1. Do a lot of bending, 2. Change in temperature, 3. Bumping your guitar, so on and so forth. So you should really learn how to tune your guitar.
There are different ways to tune your guitar. You can tune it using an electronic guitar tuner, a piano, a tuning fork or pitch pipe, from another tuned guitar, your phone or the internet. No matter which method you will use in tuning, always start below the note then up. The standard tuning is EADGBE. It is the most commonly used tuning. But there are also other guitar tunings like drop d (DADGBE), double drop (DADGBD) or Eb (EbAbDbGbGbEb) and drop Db 0r C# (DbAbDbGbBbEb).
The tunings are dependent to the song that you’ll be playing. If it requires lower notes, use a lower tuning. It all depends on you.

Stef Carpenter’s New Axe

Heard the new Deftones Album lately? Dubbed “Diamond Eyes” and trust me, I have no idea why. Anyway, the whole point of this post is all about the weapon used in this album. We all know Stef Carpenter is a great guitar player, using 6 strings and 7 strings on his craft, but 8 strings??! Not that I’m not aware of other bands using this baritone guitar, but deftones? As you glide through the albums’ tracks, you’ll realize the genius behind the low rumbling guitar sound or the angry chugs of the distorted sound, like someone’s hammering some building wall. The low f#  makes it possible for Stef Carpenter to go lower to emphasize the heaviness of the songs. And did I mention that this is a signature guitar? ESP definitely knows the heaviness of Deftones giving it another axe to chop things down low.

Anyway, here are the specs of the ESP Stef B-8 Signature Guitar:

  • Neck-Thru-Body Construction
  • 27” Baritone Scale
  • Alder Body
  • Maple Neck
  • Ebony Fingerboard
  • 55mm Graphite Nut
  • Thin U Neck Contour
  • 24 XJ Frets
  • Black Hardware
  • Sperzel Locking Tuners
  • Hipshot Fixed Bridge
  • EMG 808 (B & N) Active p.u.
  • Finish: BLK

Stef Carpenter has been using ESP’s for almost 15 years and is definitely satisfied with how it sounds. Check out the Deftones’ new album “Diamond Eyes” to hear what I mean.
